There are plenty of different ways to consume marijuana, but the oldest and more popular method of smoking cannabis is by using a pipe. They come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes meaning there are literally thousands of different types of pipes available on the market. But even with all the variations of pipes, they all function in basically the same way; put your smoking material in one end, heat it up, and inhale the smoke through the other end.

This may seem simple, but if you aren’t familiar with smoking it can be extremely difficult to figure how to use this beautiful and nice-looking pipe you just got! There’s no need to worry, though. In this article we are going to discuss the ‘anatomy’ of a pipe and how to use one in just a few simple steps.

Parts of the Pipe

There are three main parts of a pipe: the bowl, the carb, and the mouthpiece. The bowl is located in the front of pipe and is a large indent, like a bowl. This is where you would put your ground up cannabis to be smoked. Then comes the carb, short for carburetor. This is a small hole that’s usually located on the side of the pipe next to the bowl and is used, as the name suggests, to control the air flow within the pipe (we’ll talk about why that’s important later). Lastly, we have the mouthpiece which is just a hole at the opposite end of the pipe that you inhale the smoke through.

Let’s Smoke!

Now it’s time to get down to business and actually smoke your pipe. Follow these 4 steps and you’ll be smoking in no time!

  1. Grind up your weed and pack it into your bowl.

    1. Don’t pack it down too much or you won’t get any air flow stopping any smoking from reaching you.

    2. Don’t put more cannabis in the bowl then you want to smoke. This will help you to not waste and weed as well as keep your pipe clean.

  2. Place your thumb or index finger, whichever is most comfortable, over the carb and place the mouthpiece in your mouth.

  3. With your hand supporting your pipe and your finger over the carb, take your opposite hand and place a flame from a lighter over the cannabis and begin to inhale.

    1. Inhale slowly so you avoid inhaling too much smoke and having a coughing fit.

  4. Once you’ve inhaled almost as much smoke as you want, remove your finger from the carb and ‘clear’ your pipe.

    1. Clearing your pipe is a term to describe sucking out all of the smoke that is still in the pipe by letting fresh air enter the pipe through the carb. This keeps the smoke from becoming stale and staining your pipe with a burnt smell.

That’s all you need to know to smoke a pipe. Using a pipe is a fantastic way to consume cannabis but can still irritate your lungs and cause coughing. Smoke at your own pace and only consume as much as you feel comfortable doing. This will make your experience much more satisfying and enjoyable.
